The Power Of Voice!!

blkleaf

It is said that a movement begins with the telling of an untold story. So it leaves one to think, how do we tell stories? Well in older days people used to gather around a fire, or in a theater, or just used to talk to people. How else ? Threw music and performance. We as young poeple need to take advangtage of every oppurtuniny to display our talents and voice our stories. With that said there is a chance for you to do just that. On Friday the 18th  The Philadelphia Student Union will be hosting a Open Mic @ 4205 chestnut street at 7pm to 9. WE ARE IN NEED OF PERFORMERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So use your 1st amendment right and voice your stories.

Members of the Philadelphia Student Union are outraged and saddened with the violence at South Philadelphia High School.  We believe that young people need to come together to get the root causes of these issues and put in place real solutions.  We are a diverse group of students who have been developing our leadership, doing anti-oppression work, and organizing around school climate and a high quality education for all students.  We know that the true issues can only be uncovered through the empowerment of those directly effected.  We stand with the students of South Philadelphia High School and all students who are impacted by violence.  We know that young people can rise to the challenges we face.

Bears amoung zoo pets

Today in the news I herd about a woman that was attacked by a bear. The host of the morning showed contained on to say the woman had lived with the bear in her back yard and one day she went to feed it and it attacked her. I thought, now who is really the victim? At first thought I said " the woman" but after dedicating a few minutes, I discovered it was the bear. The bear had been caged up, fed what she wanted to feed him,  and had no interaction with other bears. The bear was oppressed and out of the spur of the moment decided to take action.

Being a black man in America (if you excuse the cliche) is not the only label that follows me. I am often labeled other things : ignorant, poor, incapable-or-making-something-of-myself,etc. However the title that should never be an insult is “organizer”. After 3 years of working hard, putting in the time, making change, and advocating for the respect of students, it now more than ever it is a crime to be an organizer. When people hear that word they get turned off. They look the other way, hide their faces. Perhaps it is the feeling of disappointment in themselves for not being involved more. Perhaps they feel that the government will protect their every need and i need not "complain about every little thing".

Labels... they are powerful things. However I accept my label as an organizer. I am bear! Here rrrgh or growl(?) yes. I too as bear am oppressed however I will not accept the rations slid through my cage and call it fine dining. No, there is not need for violence however there is a need for action. That is what I dream of.

Today was my first day of school; the morning went as follows: woke up> got ready> listened in as my sister play the PSU sound tack (which is great by the way) >left for school>welcomed by crowded front steps as students eagerly waited to start a new year(or in my case eager to get it over with). The track - my sister was listening to- really goting thining about how and why students get "Pushed Out".  I can relate to seeing litteraly all but 2 of my friends from 9th grade to 12th not tehre. The craziest part is that I don't even see fimailiar faces as far as students go. Sometimes i think about where they are..locked up... forced to take a low paying job...or worse.

We as teachers of life lession can not allow countless amounts of students to keep being pushed of school.  If the greatest goal of education is to allow students a chance to have a equal playiong feild in the job force, then we must make sure that every student is making it threw school to get to that level ( not to minchin that we must improve the rigor and teaching methods and materials to ensure they are all on a equal playing feild). I miss my friends and I know that this year will make or break those that remain. I myself am stressed about the upcoming a major events:  SAT(part 2), ACT(part 2), college apps, college essays, and all that other good stuff.... Wow i see why students without supports like PSU dropout...
